“Tacit” Key Highlights

Psychological Drama & Horror Fusion

The film blends psychological drama with elements of horror, creating a unique atmosphere that keeps the audience on edge. It explores the harrowing effects of buried secrets within a family and the devastating consequences they can have when they are unearthed.

Tension-Filled Family Dynamics

At the heart of the story is a dysfunctional family dynamic. Fionn, a 13-year-old boy, begins to unravel the troubling secrets of his parents, Nessa and Sean Og, while also grappling with his own strained relationship with them. This tension drives the narrative and builds to a devastating climax.

The Isolated Setting

Set in a remote family cabin deep in the woods, the location amplifies the sense of isolation and foreboding that surrounds the family. The cabin becomes a character of its own, intensifying the psychological and emotional claustrophobia felt by Fionn and the others.

Themes of Trust, Betrayal, and Family

At its core, Tacit is about trust—its erosion within a family, the betrayal of secrets, and the profound impact these fractures have on relationships. Fionn’s search for the truth leads to a deeper understanding of how the dark side of family life can distort perceptions and tear everything apart.

Riona Moulton’s Breakthrough Performance

In her first short film, Riona Moultan delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Ciara, Fionn’s older sister. Although Ciara is mute due to the effects of an acquired brain injury, her presence is profoundly felt throughout the story. Riona’s portrayal captures the depth of Ciara’s emotional world, conveying a sense of silent perception that adds complexity to the family dynamic. Despite her lack of speech, Ciara plays a crucial role in the narrative, and Riona’s performance brings a haunting and sensitive portrayal of a young woman navigating her circumstances with resilience and subtle strength.

Why “Tacit” Matters

“Tacit” matters because it explores the complexities of family dynamics and the psychological impact of long-hidden secrets. In a world where we often keep the most difficult truths buried, this film forces us to confront the tension and consequences that come with silence and unspoken truths. By focusing on a family in crisis—struggling with the weight of their own secrets—the film delves into how silence can distort perceptions, fracture relationships, and ultimately lead to devastating consequences.

The psychological drama and horror blend to reveal the disturbing realities that can lie beneath the surface of what seems like an ordinary life. “Tacit” is a compelling exploration of the impact of trauma and secrets within a family unit, and how even the most innocent, like Fionn and Ciara, can be pulled into the chaos.
